Ortahisar Castle is not just a visual feast; it is also a wonder of engineering and strategy. While it is estimated that the first foundations were laid during the Hittite period, most of the tunnel and room structures we see today were shaped during the Byzantine period. At this strategic crossing point of the Silk Road, the castle functioned as a "shelter-city."
In ancient times, when an enemy siege began, thousands of people living in the surrounding villages would retreat into this castle, and the entrances would be closed with giant sliding stones called "tığraz." The secret passages inside the castle were not just a line of defense; they were used as a military base, a courtroom, and even a place of worship in difficult times. Maintaining its strategic importance during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, the castle is the most prominent structure witnessing the past of Cappadocia today.
The biggest feature that distinguishes Ortahisar Castle from other castles is that it was not built with mortar and bricks, but by carving completely natural tuff rock. This 86-meter-high massive block is a heritage of Mother Nature, shaped by millions of years of wind and water erosion.
The internal structure consists of interconnected rooms resembling a labyrinth and steep tunnels providing transition between floors. The greatest advantage of these rooms is the thermal property of the tuff rock; the interior is cool on the hottest days of summer and sheltered at a warm temperature in the harshest colds of winter.
Although climbing the steps to the summit requires some effort, the view you encounter will make you forget all your tiredness. This is one of the highest observation decks in Cappadocia. You can clearly see the Red and Rose Valleys, Mount Erciyes, and the historic stone houses of Ortahisar from here.
Don't just visit this massive structure; feel its spirit at every moment.
